Are you Ready for the Unforeseen Flood Damage?
In almost everything that we encounter in our lives, we all know that it is always best to be prepared for any unforeseen event, calamity, tragedy or whatever that we might think of. Getting ready for a flood, or to avoid flood damage is one of the smartest decisions you can ever make. Although some people say that doing this is a sign of paranoia, I cannot agree with them. Being ready for a storm or flood is not totally a form of paranoia. This is just being aware of what might happen to them if they do not get ready. This will also help in preventing flood damage.
Preventing flood damage is not as difficult as we imagine. By just considering some questions for yourself, then answering it, you can already decide if you are ready for preventing flood damage.
First, do you already know the danger that can be brought by flood? If not, you may do some researches about flooding and flood damage. Or if you prefer obtaining information through talking with people, ask the people in your local emergency management office about this thing. They are the ones who know much regarding flood. Ask them if you could glimpse at the flood map of your area. Flood elevations might be a current project in your place. Flood map will also help you to know which specific area in your community will be greatly affected by flood damage. Also, through this you will have an idea as to the amount of water that can get into your house.
Next, you should know if you have sufficient flood insurance. Assuming you have prepared your home against imminent flood damage, you will still need to get a flood insurance policy because flood damage might still occur in your place especially when a strong storm hits your place. Get a flood insurance as early as possible because the processing of it is a tad slow. It takes around 30 days to be ready for usage.
Have you placed your primary electric switch box, electric outlets and switches higher than the usual flood level in your place? Electric fuses or circuit breakers, as well as the electric outlets and switches must be 12” (or higher) above the expected flood level in your house. But you should also remember that any electrical-related works should be made by electricians who are licensed. This will avoid suffering from an electric shock.
You should also consider putting your washer and dryer above the projected flood level. For safety, washer and dryer are usually elevated. Like the primary electric switch box, it should also be 12” or higher above the flood level. If you do not want doing elevation, you may just move your dryer and washer on the higher floor of your house.
After checking the important things in your house and then doing the suggested tips, I guess you can already escape from flood damage. Well, if not absolutely, I am pretty sure the damage will be minimized.
